Frequently asked questions

What makes the Sky Domes experience unique on the Salkantay Trek?

Sky Domes offer a elevated "glamping" experience in the high Andes. Featuring transparent glass ceilings and walls, they allow you to gaze at the starlit night sky and surrounding snow-capped peaks from the comfort of a private, sheltered dome with comfortable beds, escaping traditional tent camping while remaining surrounded by nature.

How challenging is the high-altitude pass on Day 2?

Day 2 crossing the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft) is the most challenging leg of the trek due to steep terrain and low oxygen levels. Having spent 2–3 days acclimating in Cusco beforehand and pacing yourself ensures a manageable climb. Emergency horse support is available for hire on-site if needed for the ascent.

How is gear divided between my daypack and the horse team?

Your main suitcases stay at your Cusco hotel. We provide a duffel bag for your clothing, toiletries, and sleeping gear (up to 5–7 kg), which is transported camp-to-camp by pack horses. You only carry a daypack with water, daily snacks, rain gear, sun protection, a warm jacket, and your original physical passport.

How should I pack for the drastic temperature changes on this 5-day route?

You will experience extreme climate shifts. Temperatures at the high mountain camps (Soraypampa and Chaullay) can drop below freezing (0°C to -5°C / 32°F to 23°F), while the lower high-jungle sections toward Aguas Calientes are warm and humid. Pack thermal base layers, a down jacket, a beanie, and gloves alongside light, breathable hiking clothes, insect repellent, and rain gear.
