Most treks reach between 4,200 and 4,650 m. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should walk regularly before the trip and spend 2 days in Cusco to acclimatize.
May to September is the dry season with clear skies and cold nights. The Inca Trail closes every February; Salkantay and the other treks operate all year.

Salkantay: it does not need permits, has spectacular landscapes and also ends at Machu Picchu.
Horses or porters carry camping equipment and food; you carry a day pack. Extra horses for personal items can be added.
For the Inca Trail, 3–6 months in high season. Other treks, 2–4 weeks.
